"Personal Item" is a performative exploration of the land and water that raised me. Prompted to create a ritual item, I used clay to craft a sink, a toothbrush, and a collection plate. I then visited two different waterways to collect sediment, brushed my teeth with it, and spat it into my sink. I fired the sink and it revealed the layers of iron that rest at the bottom of Pacific Northwest waterways.

I wanted to see what would happen if I tried to transform mutable Earth into a solid art object. I wanted to know what would happen if I tried to preserve the ever-shifting land that raised me. I carried this sink with me as a personal item on my United Airlines flight from Portland to Oakland.
